Camps & Lodges

1. Classic Tented Camps

The timeless charm of under-canvas safari living.

We wake to coffee and tea brought to our tents. Some days are active, others blissfully slow. Think:

  • Dawn game drives on the lookout for predators

  • Bush breakfasts surrounded by wildebeest

  • Long, lazy lunches with chilled wine

  • Giraffe-gazing from your shaded veranda

  • Evenings around a roaring campfire, G&Ts in hand

At night, sleep soundly in wide beds beneath canvas ceilings in spacious, airy tents. The day of the week? Forgotten long ago.

Follow the Herds

Mark Thornton Safaris is part of a select team offering the finest Serengeti migration experience: a true East African tented camp that moves with the wildebeest herds. We place our camps in secluded, prime wildlife-viewing zones, far from the crowds — where you can watch the migration from your tent.

We also operate classic tented camps in Tarangire, Ruaha, Katavi, and the Serengeti — ideal after a walking safari or as a base for serious wildlife viewing.

Our camps were amazing! We so enjoyed our very luxurious tents and we all LOVED the food.

2. WILDERNESS MOBILE CAMPS

Safari, the way it used to be.

In the early days of safari, all camps were mobile — because there were no lodges out in the bush. Today, we’re among the last who still specialize in true mobile tented expeditions. We have to, because where we go is remote. And we love to, because that’s what makes it a real adventure.

100% Private

Your own camp. Your own wilderness.

We send the entire camp out just for your group — complete with your own guide, vehicle, and crew. When you leave, so does the camp. No permanent infrastructure, no trace left behind. Just as it should be.

Comfortable + Wild

This is the backcountry, so the focus isn’t luxury — it’s immersion, comfort, and experience.

You’ll sleep in medium-sized walk-in tents on proper cots with linens, duvets, and pillows.

Enjoy separate toilet tents and solar-heated showers. Meals are fresh, hearty, and healthy — with plenty of cold beer and wine.

Our cheerful 2–3 person camp crew takes care of everything, so you can just soak up the wild.

I really enjoyed the wilderness mobile camp as it made us feel closer to nature. The staff there were so nice and so accommodating. The food was actually better than the luxury lodges we stayed at, in my opinion!

3. Luxury Lodges

Live a little — without losing the essence.

Whether it’s the cuisine of Singita, the sundowners at Mwiba Lodge, or the barefoot luxury of Mnemba Island, we curate the finest lodges in East Africa. But above all, your safari experience stays pure — with top-tier wildlife, expert guiding, and exclusive settings.

4. LUXURY PRIVATE CAMPS & BUSH HOMES

Your own camp. Your own schedule. Your own slice of Africa.

Picture a private camp on the Serengeti plains or a villa perched along a remote riverbank in the Selous. With your own boat, safari vehicle, and guide, the pace is entirely up to you. No itineraries. No shared spaces. Just total flexibility and freedom.

This is ideal for families, groups of friends, or anyone wanting a secluded African tent safari without compromise. Many guests start or end their trip in a private bush home, giving children space to acclimate, run free, and feel at home — before heading into the wild.

A true African tent safari blends comfort with wilderness, privacy with presence, and tradition with modern ease. However you choose to experience it — we’ll make sure it’s unforgettable.
